Network Cabling

For one of my first projects, I needed to have wired Ethernet to connect my new network. At the time, AT&T had installed only one RJ45 wall port in my living room. Me setting up in the living room was not going to go over very well with my wife. So, I had decided to dedicate a bedroom in the basement.

EIA/TIA 568B

After some investigation, I discovered that my entire home runs CAT5e, which for the time being works well because I’m being provided 1000gbps (1000baseT). This made things reasonably simple. After a few tests and installing many RJ45’s to the existing CAT5e, I established an Ethernet connection to the bedroom where my new network would be located.

I moved the modem AT&T provided (Arris BGW210) to the basement where the line from the provider originates. It’s also where all the network cables for my whole house originate. In the future, I may hardwire a few more wall plates in bedrooms and the media room for a more reliable connection. For now, I’ll continue to work on my new network.
